Fitness During Winter

October 18, 2009

While most people are eager to shed off weight during the warm summer months, keeping fit during winter can be difficult. Winter puts off many individuals who would like to keep fit or lose weight. Not only is the weather cold, but in winter there may be snow, ice or rain which makes things a wee bit dangerous for sports enthusiasts. For those who are not motivated, winter can be downright depressing. In fact, many people simply put their sports gear away till summer. However, all individuals should know that exercise during winter can be safe, rewarding and satisfying.

Even though winter days may appear dark and cold, getting out of the house is a great cure for winter blues. Even a walk along the footpaths can be invigorating during winter. The gloomy weather may down the mood but a quick jog can quickly increase energy and be motivating. People who regularly exercise during winter generally tend to be less sick, have fewer colds and remain in better shape than individuals who only exercise during warm weather. Further, when you exercise during winter, you maintain your figure and do not have to scuttle to loss of the 30 pounds gained during the winter.

Some individuals hate to go out in wintery weather and remain indoors hammering endless miles on their stationary bikes or treadmills or walking mile after mile circling shopping malls. Well, the good news is that this does not have to be the case. With proper clothing and a little pre planning, keeping fit during winter can be safe, fun and effective.

Here is how to beat the cold weather ?
While a visit to a doctor is not required for all individuals who want to exercise in the cold, asthmatics are an exception. Cold weather can worsen asthma and seriously worsen shortness of breath and wheezing. So all asthmatics should see a health care professional and use their puffers as prescribed.

The other aspect of keeping fit during winter is to dress adequately. The biggest mistake most people make is to pile up clothing. Since exercise generates energy and heat, this creates a lot of warmth, discomfort and sweat. When sweat dries out, chills set in and this creates a very unpleasant situation and worsens the sensation of cold. The ideal solution is to wear decent clothes. Start off with a thin layer material like polypropylene which does not absorb sweat. Avoid cotton fabrics which stick to skin when wet; try any number of fleece products for insulation. Then have a water proof but aerated out layer. Never go out exercising in traditional winter clothes- not only will you sweat a lot but will also look like buffoon. Generally lean individuals need a little more insulation than those who are overweight. If it is very cold, wear a woolen hat, gloves and/or a mask.

Because days are generally dark during winter, wear reflective clothing and choose foot wear with traction. If you love skiing or snowmobiling, then make sure you put on a helmet. And finally wear a sunscreen. You are just as likely to get a sun burn in winter as in summer.

Always carry fluids because dehydration occurs in both winter and summer. Remember fitness exercise during winter should be fun. If it is to cold, icy and wind chill is present, stay indoors once in awhile and watch some TV. Winter fitness is all about remaining motivated and not being burnt out.
